Someswaram Temple

Someswara Mahadeva Temple is one of the 108 Siva temples in Kerala. God Someswarathappan bless the worshippers by granting his presence and facing to the east in the valley of Mountain Villuadri blessed with natural beauty in the south shore of Bharathapuzha which separates the boundary of the two districts Thrissur and Palakkad, ie the former Kochi and Malabar.

The famous Pandavas visited here to do funeral rites for the salvation of their relatives who passed away in the war of Mahabharata and gave the name Bharathapuzha to the river. In the bank of river, they performed some Statues. They are Someshwaram, Ivor Madam and, Kothakurssi. The legend of the three are same. It is says that Bharatha Puzha is the river which Lord Parasurama brings the river Ganga as a subterranean river. There is five bathing ghats in bharatha Puzha as in river Ganga. They are Thituvilluamala, Thirunjikkuzhi, Thruthala, Thirunavaya and, Thirumittakkode. The two shore of them are superior and there is Harihara Temples in these shore. The bathing ghats of Thiruvilluamala in Bharatha Puzha is equal to the ‘Manikarnnika’ of Varanasi. It is believes that the Pandavas crossed the Punarjani caves in the south-eastern part of the temple (Indebtedness to Nalangal Krishnappilla ). Here Sri Someshwara linga statue is in a round sanctorum and, the Upadevas Unni Ganapatty granting his presence inside the temple and Sri Ayyappa and Snakes granting their presence outside the temple.

The yearly festivals are ‘Thiruvathira’ and ‘Maha Sivarathri’ in the Malayalam months of Dhanu and Kumbham. Dusk poojas are also a peculiarity. Here is an increase in the number of worshipers and in the income of the temple after the reconstruction of the temple. Parakkottukavu Devaswam is the principality under the control of Cochin Devaswam Board. The use of musical instruments happens only in peculiar occasions in this temple where ‘Nivedyapooja’ performs twice everyday. There is no stable flag-mast and the temple ritual ‘Seeveli’ here.
