I am Harigovindan also known as Tiruvilwamala Hari. I was born on 22nd August, 1964 in Tiruvilwamala, a village in Trichur District, Kerala. My father, the Late Panayamkandath Appunni Poduval, was a well known “Thimala” percussionist. He also handled other percussion instruments with equal ease. I was studying for SSLC when he passed away, incidentally on my birthday – “Avittam naal”. My mother, Oorakath Poduvattil Sathyabhaama Poduvalsyar, was a teacher in the UP Section of Meetna School.
I completed my elementary education from Pampady LP School, and primary/secondary education from Tiruvilwamala High School.
At the age of 8, I had an opportunity to study at “Guruvayoor Temple Vadya Vidyalayam”. However, as my mother wanted me to focus on my school education, as per her wish I had to reluctantly give up the plan, though I stood first in the selection list for the course,
My father was my inspiring force and he instilled in me the interest in percussion instruments. After completing my SSLC, I trained for “Temple Routine Percussions” under the guidance of Sarvasri: Panayamkandath Appu Poduval, Krishna Poduval and Tiruvilwamala Kesavan Nair. I was also the disciple of Sri Pookattiri Divakara Poduval for “Thayampaka”, while I learnt primary lessons on “Thayampaka” from Sarvasri Thrikkangode Sasi Poduval and Sivaraman Nair. I studied “Edakka” under the able guidance of Sri Thichoor Mohanan and “Sopanasangeetham” under Parppore Bala Panicker. I was also fortunate to study “Edakka” under the veteran artiste Late Sri Nharalath Rama Poduval.
